On a weekend where there were question marks about any cricket at all being played a highly exciting match took place at Sandair. Appleby won the toss and decided to field first, a move that looked like it might backfire as Carruthers and Jackson produced a steady opening partnership with neither looking too troubled. However, Forrester made the breakthrough having Jackson caught behind with the score on 21. This brought Harlow to the wicket who decided that singles were the way to keep the scoreboard ticking. All was looking good for Cockermouth until Carruthers was adjudged LBW for 22 to leave the Sandair men 60-2 off 16 overs, which was still one of their better starts with the bat this season. Two more wickets fell before drinks with Andrew Dodds deciding to leave a ball that bowled him and Jon Gibson was adjudged LBW. This left Cockermouth 69-4 at drinks and it was starting to become a familiar story for Cockermouth with wickets falling and no runs being scored. Morgan came to the wicket and decided attack was the best way to retrieve the situation and despite being hit on the head from a bouncer the score board started to move again, however Morgan with the score on 85 gave Nattress a easy return catch and Cockermouth were up against it at 85-5. The next 5 wickets fell quickly with some poor shots mixed it with good bowling. Harlow was the last man out for 30 trying to score some quick runs with only one wicket left to fall and Cockermouth were 98 all out. Particular credit must go to Moore and Nattress who finished with figures of 4-26 and 3-22 respectively.
Tea was taken with Cockermouth feeling that the only way to take anything out of the game was with tight bowling at the beginning of the innings, to this end Dodds and Morgan opened the bowling and conceeded 7 runs off six overs which was exactly what Cockermouth were looking for. The next 2 overs brought two wickets both from run outs and Cockermouth felt they were in the game, one a great piece of fielding by Carruthers at square leg to dismiss Curley for 4. The next was less spectacular with Skibeck stopping the ball at Mid on with his foot rather than his hands!!! However, next 10 overs went to Appleby who although losing another wicket to Morgan progressed to 54-3 at drinks, and it seemed that barring some magic from one or more of the Cockermouth bowlers the game would be over. Mark Middleton came into the attack shortly after drinks and gave Cockermouth the magic they needed with figures of 4-6 off 4 overs. This was a great return to the side for Middleton who had been missing the previous week due to work commitments and shows that on his day he can be a matchwinner. Entering the final 10 overs Appleby needed 17 runs with 3 wickets remaining. The next over went to Appleby who despite losing a wicket scored 10 runs off the over to leave themselves only 7 to win. However, Middleton produced a great over under pressure and took a wicket leaving the score 94-9. Dodds started his final over knowing one bad ball and it was all over. The 2nd ball of the over seemed to all but seal the win for Appleby with was crashed for 4 over cover leaving them needing one to win. However, the very next ball Dodds produced a superb yorker which hit middle stump to end the game with both teams dismissed for 98 and ending a very exciting game.
