Saturday 4th July 2009: Dalton CC 'v' Cockermouth CC at Dalton
NL & CCL Premier Division.
| Toss Won By: Dalton CC | Decision: To Bat | Weather: Showers |
| Cockermouth CC | Dalton CC |
| 146 for 6 from 31overs | 150 all out from 50 overs |

| Cockermouth CC receive 12 points | Penrith CC receive 18 points |
A rain affected draw gave Cockermouth and Dalton 12 points each on Saturday.
After winning the toss Dalton surprisingly elected to bat but made a good start with Costa and Walker scoring around three runs an over to take their side to 65-0. The introduction of spin in the form of Chaka and Whitey slowed the scoring and Chaka made the breakthrough when Walker was caught at point by Buchs. This began a bit of a collapse with both spinners grabbing three wickets each as Dalton limped to 106-6 off 35 overs when the players were forced from the field because of rain. It would have been better for Cockermouth had Ryan not dropped one of the easiest chances in cricketing history. This was to be the start of a bad day for him! After a long rain break which incorporated tea, where Ryan fell for the funny smelling ice-cream joke, the teams came back out. Dalton batted positively before Tom took an excellent boundary catch to stall their momentum. It then became clear that Dalton wanted to bat as many overs as possible to give Cockermouth the least amount of time to chase the target. The Dalton innings closed on 150 from 49 overs after an excellent run out from Hodge. Chaka and Whitey who both bowled well throughout finished with four and five wickets respectively. This left Cockermouth with 31 overs to score 151.
Greg and Chaka opened and batted very positively and when both reached 50 at 110-0 from 22 overs Cockermouth were clear favourites. Unfortunately both fell within two overs trying to hit sixes on the biggest boundary on the ground. The game should still have been won but brainless cricket and good bowling from Dalton saw Cockermouth come up just short on 146-7. There was nothing else positive to report from the batting but hopefully Cockermouth can learn from this experience and if they find themselves in the same position again can take a better result from the game.
Saturday 27th June 2009: Cockermouth CC 'v' Penrith CC at Sandair
NL & CCL Premier Division.

A spirited performance from Cockermouth sadly ended up with a loss with two balls to spare in a tense Sandair encounter. A late team change for the home side saw former captain, Steve Chambers make his first top team appearance in three years as Ben Morgan was violently ill during the warm-up.
Having been asked to bat first on a green pitch, Cockermouth started positively before the first of a series of interesting decisions impacted, as Greg Platten was adjudged caught behind having hit his pad with his bat. Gareth White went third ball for a duck before Hodge and Gimber steadied the innings. Gimber was then adjudged LBW, despite having got a huge stride in and the ball appearing to pitch outside leg stump for 32. Ryan Carruthers was clean bowled by Fernando and Hodge followed soon after, hitting a catch to mid-off for 25. Chris Hodgson was adjudged LBW despite playing the ball onto his pad before O'Neill and Chambers got together and put a vital partnership together. Chambers anchored the partnership as O'Neill played some lovely shots before being caught by himself for 47. Grainger and Chambers added runs before the close as Cockermouth were dismissed for 189.
Penrith started brightly before Burns smashed a catch to Carruthers at mid-off for 12. Fernando and Middleton batted well together and the runs flowed for Fernando as Middleton hung about at the other end. Numerous bowlers were tried, before Chaka Hodge and Gareth White stemmed the flow, Hodge forcing the wicket of Fernando, bowling the Sri Lankan for 52 behind his legs. Fernando had been lucky to survive a strong LBW shout when on 8 from Grainger. White then dismissed Middleton, LBW for a painstaking 49 from 35 overs. The run rate was gradually dragged back and wickets continued to fall, Barnes picking up Hall and Hodge McLean as Penrith faltered, leaving themselves 1 to get from 2 overs, Barnes bowled a maiden. Gareth White bowled three dots before Penrith scrambled a leg bye to 12th man Harry Kaufman at short fine leg, on for the injured Tom O'Neill.
A gutsy effort from the Sandair men as they made Penrith work right to the very end for their win.

| Furness CC win and progress to semi-finals |
Cockermouth exited the Higson Cup on Sunday after a six wicket defeat at home to Furness.
Cockermouth lost the toss and were asked to bat first. The openers made a decent start before Chaka was dismissed. Alex, promoted to number three, struggled for timing on a very slow wicket and was eventually dismissed for 17. Buchs (37) and Greg (72) were able to increase the run rate before Buchs was bowled. Tom hit a huge six off Horne and after a late flurry of wickets Cockermouth closed their 45 overs on 172-6. At halfway Cockermouth were reasonably satisfied with their score and felt confident of defending the total.
Ben got Cockermouth off to a perfect start by trapping Majid LBW for 0 in the first over and when Chaka bowled Capstick Furness were 30-2. However sensible innings from Gadsden and Daly enabled Furness to keep up with the run rate throughout their innings. There were periods when Cockermouth built pressure but there were too many four balls that allowed Furness to bat without a lot of pressure on them. Hodge and Chaka were both unlucky not to dismiss Smith who looked all at sea at the beginning of his innings but he played more confidently as his innings progressed. Tom was the pick of the bowlers and dismissed Gadsden and Daly but Furness got home with five overs to spare. It was a decent effort from a young and inexperienced team. The only disappointing thing was that a number of the team seemed to think the game was over with 50 runs still needed. Everyone needs to remember that one ball can change a game of cricket!
A disappointing weekend but Penrith at home on Saturday gives the team a perfect chance to bounce back.
Saturday 20th June 2009: Cockermouth CC 'v' Millom CC at Sandair
NL & CCL Premier Division.
| Toss Won By: Millom CC | Decision: To Bowl | Weather: Sunny |
| Cockermouth CC | Millom CC |
| 131 all out from 44 overs | 132 for 2 from 28 overs |
| B Morgan 4 for ? | |
| Cockermouth CC receive 2 points | Millom CC receive 18 points |
A disappointing weekend for Cockermouth began with only two points from a comprehensive thrashing at home to Millom.
After winning the toss Cockermouth chose to bat on a hard surface. The pitch provided a few problems for the batsmen with steepling bounce on several occasions. After losing Hugh early, Gareth was forced to retire hurt and Greg and Chaka were also dismissed to leave Cockermouth in deep trouble at 15-3. Ryan and Buchs began to rebuild the innings before Buchs played a very poor shot and was caught at midwicket. With Ryan run out and Hodge harshly adjudged LBW the home side were really staring down the barrel. However Cockermouth showed that they bat right down the order. Tom (37) and Grainger (23) batted very well to get Cockermouth up to 131.
Cockermouth knew that early wickets would put them in the hunt on a pitch that was still difficult to bat on. Des provided his customary wicket in his first over bowling the dangerous Swallow but positive strokeplay from the Millom batters allowed them to score quickly. Several bowlers were tried but to no avail as Millom reached their target with plenty of overs in hand.
Saturday 13th June 2009: Workington CC 'v' Cockermouth CC at Workington
NL & CCL Premier Division.
| Toss Won By: Workington CC | Decision: To Bowl | Weather: Cloudy |
| Workington CC | Cockermouth CC |
| 160 for 8 wickets from 50 overs | 225 for 7 from 50 overs |
| I Buchanan 65 | |

| T O'Neill 5 - 27 | |
| Workington CC receive 9 points | Cockermouth CC receive 18 points |
Cockermouth’s good run continued as they took 16 points from a winning draw at local rivals Workington.
Batting first after losing the toss Cockermouth made a good start with Chaka and Hugh scoring at a reasonable rate. After reaching 50-0 Hugh got an edge and was caught behind off the bowling of Walker. Chaka quickly followed when he was caught at mid on off the same bowler for 30. Gareth played some nice shots before falling LBW to Turner who quickly added the wickets of Greg and Ryan. When Tom got an unplayable bouncing delivery from Simon James, Cockermouth were in trouble at 114-6. However Buchs and Hodge began to build a partnership, beginning by taking runs whenever they were on offer and not forcing things. As the innings moved past the 40 overs mark, Buchs at first, quickly followed by Hodge began to play more expansively and runs flowed quickly. The vocal support from the Cockermouth players and fans was excellent as 88 runs were added from the last seven overs. There were many excellent shots but the highlights were Hodge’s huge six over wide long on off Cumberland bowler Matthew Gorley and Buchs shuffle across his stumps to flick Turner away for four past fine leg. Buchs was bowled for 65 in the last over trying to repeat the shot but Hodge finished unbeaten on 52 as Cockermouth closed on an excellent 225-7.
The wicket was still good and the outfield fast so Cockermouth knew they would have to bowl well if they were to win the game. Ben struck an early blow when he removed Reedy LBW but Kristian and Jordan Whinn began to put a partnership together that should have been ended on 60 but Buchs dropped a simple chance at midwicket. The score reached 98-1 and Workington would have been fancying their chances. But cometh the hour cometh the man as Tom returned with a vengeance to his former club. Two wickets in an over changed the game as he had Kristian caught and clean bowled Simon James. He followed up with three more wickets included the dangerous Gorley caught behind to finish with an excellent 5-27. From here Workington were content to bat for the draw. The final highlight of the game was regular wicketkeeper Hugh Gimber’s first over for the 1st XI. It was described as this, “2 flighted offies, bit of turn, then the quicker one, patted back, then a leggie, patted back, even more flighted 5th one, round the wicket for the 6th, hit on the toe in front of middle, LBW thank you very much! It was like Flintoff’s over in the 2005 Ashes!” This meant that Workington closed on 156-8 and took nine points from the game.

18 points for Cockermouth from their trip to Kirkby on Saturday as their recent good form continued.
With rain around a delayed start meant that a 47 overs a side game began at 2.20. Buchs won a useful toss and decided to have a bowl with the wicket being damp from the rain that had been floating around. A very young and inexperienced Cockermouth took to the field and Tom and Ben in particular started well with Ben picking up three top order wickets. With Grainger also collecting a wicket early in his spell Kirkby were in trouble at 35-4. Barnesy, demoted from new ball bowler to second change, picked up a caught and bowled and at 55-5 the Cockermouth team were confident of keeping the hosts to less than a hundred. However Etchells had other ideas as he began to launch the spinners to the extremely short boundaries at some parts of the ground. With Fugler also exploiting the short straight boundaries the run rate started to rise. It quickly became obvious that spin has no part to play at Kirkby! Golden arm Greg Platten was introduced to the attack and did the business once again removing Fugler LBW for 36. With Tom and Ben again finding good areas in their second spells Cockermouth were able to frustrate Etchells by keeping him at the non strikers end. Eventually he holed out to deep midwicket for an entertaining 56 and with Tom collecting a couple of wickets Kirkby were bowled out for 161 in the final over of their innings.
Cockermouth were confident of knocking off the runs and with Whitey absent Chaka moved up to the top of the order where his best innings for Cockermouth have been played. Gimber was dismissed early; getting a leading edge to mid off but Chaka was happy to play his shots against all the bowlers and reached his 50 with the score on only 65! Greg was dismissed after being bamboozled by Etchells but Chaka continued to hammer shots to all parts of the ground. Even when he was dismissed LBW for 76, Cockermouth were 97-3 and had plenty of time left to knock off the remaining runs. However, a batting collapse made things interesting. The dismissals of Ryan for 14 and Tom and Hodge without troubling the scorers meant Cockermouth found themselves wobbling on 125-6 but mature innings from Buchs, 31no, and Davo who made 15 in his first league game for the 1st XI took Cockermouth to within 5 of victory. Grainger clipped his first ball for four and a scrambled leg bye took Cockermouth to victory. The result keeps Cockermouth heading the right way in the league table and the performance means there will be a very interesting selection meeting this week before the trip to local rivals Workington next Saturday.
Sunday 31st May 2009: Penrith CC 'v' Cockermouth CC at Tynedale Park
Cumbria Cup.
| Toss Won By: Penrith CC | Decision: To Bat | Weather: Sunny and warm |

| Penrith CC win by 96 runs |
Absolute carnage ensued at Penrith on Sunday as Cockermouth made a more than respectable 235-7 from their 40 overs but were beaten by 96 runs!
Buchs made the worst decision of his life by calling tails in glorious sunshine and when the coin came down heads Nicky Burns had no hesitation in deciding to bat on an excellent looking wicket with a short boundary on one side. Runs flowed quickly throughout the Penrith innings, particularly either side of the drinks break. Lowlights for Cockermouth were successive dropped catches in the outfield off the bat of pro Fernando when he was in the 80’s. To compound the agony of Alex the bowler both were pushed over the boundary for six! In a moment of inspiration Buchs threw the ball to Ryan who didn’t fare too badly in his first over. However in his second over Fernando dispatched three successive sixes en route to 113 from 67 balls, a fine innings full of impressive shots. Captain Burns also made a fine hundred as Penrith finished on a huge 331-5 from their 40 overs.
Cockermouth had probably a 1 in 10,000 chance of knocking off the runs but after the early dismissals of Greg and Hodge Buchs and Chaka had Penrith worried for a while and after 19.5 overs with the score 149-2 the impossible was possible. However, the dismissal of Buchs for 35, bowled trying to slog Fernando into Penrith town centre and Chaka in the following over for an impressive 86 ended Cockermouth’s chances. Chaka’s innings was full of powerful shots down the ground, one of which managed to smash a window in Penrith School! Cockermouth used the remaining overs for batting practice and Grainger and Davo both impressed with Alex making 31 and Davo 39no. He finished the innings with a six straight down the ground which pretty much summed up the days entertainment. Defeat for Cockermouth but with many experienced players missing there were many positives to take from the game, particularly in the batting.

Cockermouth gained their first outright win of the season as they cemented their place in the top half of the table after defeating Lindal Moor at Sandair.
Batting first after winning the toss Cockermouth soon found themselves two down with Greg and Hugh both falling early on to Nibbly Swinger. Buchs and Gareth put together a decent recovery before Buchs was bowled for 28. Gareth quickly followed for a well made 60 before he was also dismissed, caught and bowled. Good batting throughout the Cockermouth order in the closing overs saw them close on 218-6 with Ryan making 48, Chaka 24, Hodge 26no and Doddsy 11no. At half way Cockermouth felt this was a decent effort, especially with the ridiculously big boundary, and if they could get a couple of early wickets a win could be achieved.
Ben, on his league debut was quickly on the money and picked up his first wicket clean bowled, an absolute jaffa that pitched leg and hit the top of off! Barnesy also picked up a clean bowled. The batsmen’s perfect defensive stroke beaten by the spin! After a brief rally Chaka joined the party and ended with 4-24 and he also took an excellent catch in the gully to give Alex a wicket. Hodge also chipped in with two, one of which was a horrendous full toss that deserved to be hit for six but was instead lobbed into Buchs’s hands at midwicket! When Chaka picked up the last wicket, smartly stumped by Hugh, Lindal had reached 90 and Cockermouth had a comfortable first win of the season.

An excellent all round performance from Cockermouth saw them take a winning draw at home to Whitehaven.
After losing the toss Cockermouth were invited to bat first in a match reduced to 47 overs a side. Again it was an excellent opening partnership from Greg and Hugh that set Cockermouth up for a good total. Hugh made 38, Gareth made 50 quickly and Greg smashed the ball around the ground to make a quite magnificent 111 which included a couple of fantastic sixes off Butterworth, the Whitehaven pro, one of which cleared the pavilion. These innings provided the platform for Cockermouth to reach 225-5 from their 50 overs.
It was anticipated that Whitehaven would try and chase the runs and the first ball proved it with Birkett trying to smash Tom out the ground. Unfortunately for him he was bowled middle stump! Bruce and Holliday steadied the ship before Grainger was introduced for his first bowl in a few weeks. He certainly wasn’t rusty though and in his second over he removed Bruce, bowled playing no shot and the pro caught behind for a duck. With Chaka also claiming a wicket it was a battle for survival for Whitehaven. Former Cockermouth player Watson played a couple of his trademark big shots before being snared at slip off Hodge but with Kelly providing a good rearguard effort they closed their innings on 118-7. The result meant 16 points for Cockermouth and six for Whitehaven.
Sunday 17th May 2009: Workington CC 'v' Cockermouth CC at Workington
Higson Cup Second Round.

| Workington CC 2 hits in BOWL OUT | Cockermouth CC 4 hits in BOWL OUT |
At the second time of asking, and despite the heroic efforts to dry the ground from the Workington team two weeks earlier, the Higson Cup game reverted to the cricketing version of a penalty shoot-out, with the sides contesting a bowl-out on Sunday. Both sides disappointed on the 2nd of May as the home side battled an almost tropical storm to dry a massive 6 foot by 4 foot damp patch 20 yards from the wicket. The snorkel wearing and never ending forking of the aforementioned wet patch was in vain, as umpires called time on the game. Sadly, the waterhog was 'unavailable' that day, but thankfully (and miraculously) the waterhog had made a full recovery to get the ground playable for the minor counties game at Workington on the 9th.
A wet outfield on Sunday meant a bowl out was inevitable when Cockermouth met Workington in the Higson Cup. Despite attempts to dry the ground again, a shower of rain meant that the teams geared up for a bowl out to decide who would be rewarded with a home tie against Furness in the Quarter Final. Buchs decided to place his confidence in his most accurate bowlers and selected Barnesy, Chaka and Tom as the first three. Suffice to say it was 0-0 after three shots each. Luckily Grainger struck off stump with the fourth attempt and from then on Cockermouth were never behind, eventually winning 4-2 thanks to further strikes from Hodge, Ryan and Buchs. Not the best way to progress but certainly better than being knocked out the same way. Just a quick word about Basil’s delivery. It was the worst attempt ever seen in the history of bowl outs. After being advised by his captain to come off his proper run up he totally ignored that and sauntered in off a few paces bowling the ball a good six foot over the top of the stumps. He also must have missed the bit about the ball having to bounce once and the bit about trying to hit the stumps! Chin up Bas, after this weekend of cricketing worst’s the only way is up!

Rain brought a premature end to what looked like an exciting finish to the game between Haverigg and Cockermouth on Saturday.
The day started well with Basil, Buchs and Chaka arriving just fifteen minutes before the start after Basil was held up by a car crash, surprisingly not involving him. This still gave Buchs plenty of time to maintain his 100% record with the coin toss in away games and Haverigg were invited to bat on a wet wicket which was accompanied by a sodden outfield. In all fairness it was an excellent effort by Haverigg to get the game on as could be seen by the fact that four of six league games elsewhere were washed out without a ball being bowled. Cockermouth started well with Tom and Barnesy keeping the scoring to a minimum, Barnesy bowling six consecutive maidens. Bas came on to try and achieve a breakthrough and should have got it but he failed to take the caught and bowled chance with the most awful, terrible, shambolic and comical attempt in cricketing history! Luckily he picked up the same batter in the next over. Robert Bell continued his run of fine form against Cockermouth; following last year’s 23 ball duck he made 19 from 78 deliveries before being caught at square leg. It was lucky for Cockermouth that Haverigg’s professional, Saman Jayantha, making his debut, didn’t spend more time at the crease as the 76 balls he faced produced 99 runs with five huge sixes. Some of his shots, especially the six over square leg off Tom from a ball a foot outside off stump defied belief! Thanks to this fine effort after their fifty overs Haverigg closed on 186-5.
Cockermouth started well with Greg again displaying a fine array of shots as Cockermouth reached 50 for no wicket. His dismissal, unluckily caught by someone fielding in the wrong position was quickly followed by that of Whitey who was caught at mid off. Chaka and Hugh consolidated before Chaka fell, cleaned bowled by home skipper Milk Carton. He followed this with the wickets of Hugh and Ryan, unluckily adjudged caught behind off his pad. Buchs and Tom on five and four respectively were at the crease when rain ended play for the day with fourteen overs still to play. Cockermouth finished on 122-5 to take nine points from the game.

A good all round performance led to Cockermouth taking 16 points from a winning draw at home to local rivals Keswick.
Heavy rain an hour before play looked like it would ruin all possibility of a game at Sandair but no one had counted on the magic sponge and its operator, Hugh ‘Denham’ Gimber! A small patch of standing water meant that the sponge was dug out from the back of the shed where it had resided for a couple of years and in no time at all Hugh had mopped up most of the water and with everyone else chipping in, including Buchs with the worst boundary line in living memory, the game was ready to start at 3.30.
Cockermouth made a strong start with Greg and Hugh scoring quickly against the seamers. Spin was quickly introduced and the Cockermouth players and supporters were amazed as Hugh smashed a ball straight down the ground for six!! The first (and last?) six of his 1st XI career. Greg fell for 32 and Hugh seemed to have used up all of his shots for the day as Gareth quickly caught up with him in the 20’s. On a sluggish wicket though they kept the scoreboard moving and both celebrated 50’s within a couple of overs of each other. Hugh’s dismissal allowed the power hitters to the crease and the main highlight was Hodge’s six onto the pavilion roof and the rebound was well caught one handed by Matthew. At the end of Cockermouth’s 38 over’s the final total was 169-4, a very competitive score.
Cockermouth got off to the best possible start as Stormer picked up a wicket in his first over. This brought Keswick’s pro to the crease, fresh from 99no the previous weekend. Luckily he didn’t hang around long and Tom got a fully deserved wicket when he sliced a catch to Greg at backward point. Tight bowling meant Keswick were getting frustrated and captain Weightman was bowled aiming on heave too many at Chaka. Joshua Barnes then got his man as the ‘Randy Bull’ in Webby got the better of him and he was bowled charging down the wicket. At this stage Cockermouth were hoping to whittle out as many batters as possible with Chaka and Gareth grabbing a wicket apiece. With seven wickets down and a draw looking highly likely Greg came running in and first ball castled A.Poker for his first 1st XI wicket. Next ball he had another, also clean bowled and Cockermouth scented victory. Unfortunately they couldn’t get the final wicket but with Keswick finishing on 80-9 it ended as a comfortable winning draw for the home side. This performance should give the team plenty of confidence as they look forward to the rest of the season.

Cockermouth came away from Barrow disappointed at taking nine points from a losing draw against Furness.
Buchs won a good toss with Furness asked to bat first on a pitch that was still slightly damp from Friday’s rain. After a maiden from Tom, Stormer stepped up to take the new ball and immediately spun one through the gate of former Cockermouth professional Martin Lewis, bowling him off stump to get Cockermouth off to a good start. Stormer picked up another perfect off spinners wicket as he bowled Daly through the gate and Tom grabbed two deserved wickets; the best of which saw him swing the ball through the shot of comedy pads as the stumps went flying. Hodge and Chaka both picked up a wicket to leave Furness struggling on 70-6 but sensible batting from the remainder of the team, well marshalled by Captain Horne saw Furness reach 161-9 from their 50 overs. Stormer finished with three wickets, Chaka and Tom grabbed two each while Basil and Hodge got one each.
With the pitch playing well and the outfield reasonably quick Cockermouth felt confident that they could knock the runs off and take 18 points from the game. Extras started off well for Cockermouth and racked up a few runs at the start of the innings but Hugh fell for seven, caught behind as he got a top edge to a ball that bounced a bit. However things started to look good for Cockermouth as Greg got into his stride and Gareth began to nudge the ball around. The score reached 70-1 and this should have been the basis for Cockermouth to go on and win the game. Greg’s LBW, to a ball that looked high from the side on view unfortunately led to a collapse with Chaka, Buchs and Matthew all falling to poor shots for a combined total of four. Gareth also got a snick on a good legbreak and Cockermouth found themselves 90-6. After a brief recovery more wickets fell including Michael Vaughan who just took the bat as an accessory. The only shot he played was a typical ‘Vaughan-esque’ cover drive, the only problem being the ball had already crashed into the stumps when he played it! The positive for Cockermouth was seeing out the last eight overs with nine wickets down. Alex, with a very mature and promising innings and the league’s best number 11, Stormer, held off the Furness bowling and absolutely rubbish sledging to secure the losing draw. The result means a big game looms large against local rivals Keswick this coming Saturday.

A promising performance from Cockermouth, much improved from the previous week, saw them claim 11 points from a rain affected draw at home to Dalton.
Losing the toss meant that Cockermouth were asked to bat first by Dalton captain and former Everton and Norwich manager Mike Walker. This proved no bad thing however as Greg and Hugh set about taking the Dalton attack apart, with Greg in particular racing along to his first 50 of the season. Following a rain disruption Greg launched a couple of sixes down the ground and looked set for a hundred but unfortunately he fell for an excellent 91 made from just 87 balls, caught at mid on. Gareth was also quickly back in the pavilion, plumb LBW first ball. The rain then unfortunately came and 32 overs were lost to the rain. Quick runs were the order of the day after the rain and after Buchs was caught it allowed Chaka to show his hitting power with 33no from just 18 balls, including three sixes. Meanwhile Hugh was poking his way to a very well made 70no at the other end. The positive batting allowed Cockermouth to declare on 205-3 from 38 overs. This meant Dalton would have 30 overs to bat to save the game.
With runs not an issue Cockermouth could afford to attack but an early wicket didn’t come. B.Iffer played very positively from the off striking several clean blows off an unlucky Tom who seemed to either beat the bat or get hit for four from every ball! It was the introduction of new crowd favourite Chaka Hodge that brought about the first wicket with an LBW decision. Cockermouth switched the bowling at regular intervals in an effort to take wickets and it was the other Hodge who picked up the next wicket with a caught and bowled effort. Whitey also grabbed one but on this occasion his delightful moon balls couldn’t bring any further breakthroughs. Another wicket for Chaka, caught at silly point gave Cockermouth the sniff of another point but Dalton closed their innings on 120-4. This encouraging performance gives the team a good base on which to build for the rest of the season.

Glorious sunshine welcomed the Cockermouth team as they arrived at Penrith but unfortunately that was the high point of the day! Considering it was mid-April the pitch was an absolute belter and the outfield was like lightning.
Cockermouth decided to bowl first after winning the toss and as Tom ran in to start the season Gareth’s prediction “I bet this is a massive wide outside off stump” unfortunately came true! Things started equally as badly at the other end where sub pro Liam Simpson fired down a wide followed by five wides. At drinks 127-1 really could and should have been turned into 300 plus but a decent fightback meant Penrith made it up to 259-5 from their 50 overs. Highlights were an excellent second spell from Greg Barnes which got him three wickets, including the pro thanks to an excellent running catch from Ryan. Greg and Hodge also excelled with superb displays in the field. Bas bowled a good spell and took a catch at long off but then proceeded to boot the ball back – probably not a good idea when you’re made of glass!! After the game he announced that he won’t be bowling much at nets this year, he’s saving himself for the matches. Cockermouth has its very own Ledley King – or perhaps Paul McGrath when you consider the alcoholism!
In an effort to be positive and get the runs Tom moved up to open with Greg. Things couldn’t have started much worse though when Greg edged to slip in the first over and then in the second over the Penrith bowler used the Cockermouth tactic of starting with a wide; unfortunately the second one was straight and Tom joined Greg back in the pavilion. Hugh hung around for a while but both he and Buchs were out by the time drinks were taken and it was simply a case of batting out the overs. Gareth and Liam began to be more expansive as the game started to look safe in an effort to secure as many bonus points as possible. A couple of wickets fell but Gareth batted very well in making 73no as Cockermouth closed on 165-6 to take eight points from a losing draw.
